Now about my trip in Bangkok

Hihi..

This was a business trip for me to Bangkok so I didn't had time to be in Singapore for a reasonable amount of time. Had a really good trip for work and also for visiting my friends in Bangkok! MISSED the food so much man, you can't seem to get away from dutchified chinese food in the Netherlands so it was almost like a food haven for me this time.

Just some info. This was pretty much a fact-finding trip for FIP and I was there with Mr Kurt, professional secretary of FIP community pharmacy section, in our colloboration with Thailand, for GPP implementation discussions. Perhaps I can show and share some interesting facts about the practice of pharmacy in Thailand.

There are three types of pharmacy. Type A (i), Type A (ii) and Type B.

Type A (i) pharmacy are owned by pharmacists and they can dispense all medications according to the 3 schedules of drug classification. As you can see, there is a logo of "Quality Pharmacy", accredited by the Pharmacy Council for this pharmacy. One of the elements of GPP implementation in Thailand is with regards to the accreditation processes.

Here you can see the pharmacist engaging the patient in her counseling. Btw, the couple you see above are both pharmacists and they are the pharmacy owners too.

The location of this pharmacy is at the suburbs of Bangkok city and business is good for them because there is the main carpark for this catchment area just opposite the pharmacy.

Type A (ii) pharmacy are not owned by pharmacists and they have to hire a pharmacist to dispense the medications. The minimum number of dispensing hours is 3 hours. For this pharmacy, you can see the pharmacy owner on the right side, the pharmacist is his brother and he holds a regular job at a drug company in the day, so dispensing hours are from 7pm to 10pm.

By law, it is a requirement for the pharmacy to have a sign indicating the dispensing hours. Type A pharmacies have a blue sign. You can also see that the pharmacy certifications are displayed.

This pharmacy was recently open a month ago so you could see that things were pretty neat. The influence of a pharmacist in good pharmacy practice is obvious when we compare with a Type B pharmacy.

Type B pharmacy are not owned by a pharmacist and they do not hire pharmacists at all. Selling is limited to only pre-packed pharmaceutical products and no loose pack selling is allowed. But as you can see, enforcement is not easy in the suburbs and upcounty areas. The pharmacy owner was a little jitterly when we arrived. The lady in the photo is from Thai FDA and she is one of the inspectors and head of Import and Export Division.

Type B pharmacy uses a green sign. Here you can figure out that the pharmacy opening hours are from 10am to 6pm.

We found out that he was selling tetracycline capsules and amoxilicin tablets loose. These are antibotics. He mentioned that it was because his pharmacy was the first to open in this area so by the history of time, he had always been selling these medications to the community for cough and colds! He used to sell a wider range of drugs but now, he is not focusing on drug sales because of the new accredited pharmacy nearby. But he still kept these two antibotics because he had regular customers on them.

Summary:

A pharmacist in Thailand can do so much in terms of community pharmacy practice because of the wide range of medications under Pharmacy Only schedule (this includes antibotics and most of the chronic care diseases drugs). Thus with the new thinking and shifts in Good Pharmacy Practice guidelines and regulations, it is much anticipated that we can show more clearly the role of the pharmacist in the community setting for health promotion and rational drug use in Thailand.

First date?

She was someone new that I met...someone from Singapore...and tonite we had dinner together!!

NICE...we ate along Wagenstraat at Kee Lun restaurant. At few moments I would look with a straight face at the waitress who was chinese and speaking in fluent dutch to me! In my mind, I was torn between being impressed at her language and chuckling silently that I am going to tell her after her full introduction of the menu that I cannot understand dutch..hehe

Anyway, back to my new friend found. We had really good chinese food and throughout the dinner, she was really nice and explained to me the various dutch cultures and revealed to me all some of the really nice places to visit in the Netherlands.

I must visit this place - Efteling - A fairyland in holland it is - http://www.efteling.nl/home.aspx?LanguageId=2

Dutch theme park Efteling will open its gates for the 54th time on Friday 25 March, full of the spirit of spring, with more than 300,000 flower bulbs and spring plants. Each day from then onwards, Efteling will present four performances of the brand-new 'Efteling Fairy Tale Show', a park show with fairy tales by Hans Christian Andersen. This is one of the ways Efteling is marking the 200th anniversary of the birth of this famous Danish author. Another is the latest addition to the Fairy Tale Forest: the Little Match Girl. May will see the presentation of the 5th Efteling Anton Pieck Prize, which is also based on Hans Christian Andersen this year. And finally, the Efteling Museum presents a temporary exhibition about the Efteling fairy tales that were written by the famous writer from Denmark. But there will be plenty of other things happening at Efteling, too. During the Efteling Seven League Summer, from 11 July to 28 August, the park will be open every day until 9 p.m.

Oh no, so sorry Seok and Wendy, u guys left liao...hehe

Hmm, my next visitors are Yoko and Izumi!! They are arriving 1st week of August after I come back from Thailand. :)

Back to my friend....(no photos btw)

She has a few good philipino friends and soon, she is going to introduce me to the phillipino community here!

So, I have another new friend now. Her name is Jean.

Back from Geneva

Hihi..

Been almost a week since my last post! Wow! Am I lazy or am I really busy? hehe...

Well...on sat, seok and wendy left me....sob sob, perhaps that's why I have no mood to write .... so on this note, let me introduce to you guys a really catchy song with sad lyrics...download this and listen. You will understand what i mean. I can almost believe why this song by Akon is now Number 1 song on the MTV here. Imagine when I first arrived, when I returned home to a empty apartment and I switched on the tv and this is the first song I heard....

Mr Lonely by Akon

Anyway, after Seok and Wendy left, I went to Amsterdam to cut my hair! Hehe...at my new gay friend's hair salon. He and his partner are hair stylists. Quite cool ..haha...and so I got my hair cut...photos are with Tana, so I will have to get from her and upload maybe tomorrow. She also had her hair cut too. She is now still in Geneva for meetings.

Yesterday I was in Geneva! Was a really rushed day for me actually. Woke up at 545am so that I can catch the first tram to the train station, then to Schipol Airport to catch my Easyjet to Geneva. Arrived in Geneva, took a cab to the WHO builiding. Had a meeting straight away, then a lunch meeting, then another meeting in the afternoon. Spent an hour at the WHO library of publications, couldn't really find the documents that I wanted. Left the building at about 5pm, caught a cab to airport and left at about 7pm! Reached back to the Hague at about 10pm. Phew! Was that a packed day or what?

Best of all, I didn't even had time to take proper photos! hehe..how can that happen?? So, while waiting for the on-call cab to arrive at the WHO building, I took a snapshot of the WHO entrance with my handphone camera! hehe...and asked Ton to take a shot of me too! :)

Not the best of shots but here they are:

This is a photo of the WHO logo on their glass door. The building seems to come from the 70's era.

Me! My very first visit to WHO. Quite an interesting experience. I think I learnt a lot from the discussions with the WHO people. I had a chance to present our proposal too! More to come!

Now, I have to prepare for my trip to Thailand next week. Going to be there for a week of meetings!
